As many of you probably know, Connor and I pulled out one of the old D4-6U's (the one that was parked behind the scraper) and brought it over to the shop. The first problem we noticed was a crack in the fuel filter housing. Connor was able to weld up the crack, and seal it with JB weld. But other times, JB weld is not the proper repair...When we put water in the radiator, well suffice to say, it went straight out the bottom. Basically someone had tried to repair the nonexisitant underside with JB weld, and of course, it did not fix it lol. After discovering this we needed to see if it would even run to see if project was still worth it. We were able to pull start the dozer, and it does run very well. It drives back and forth, but the steering is completely gone. We pulled the back plates off, and much to our horror, the supposed "dry clutches" were in fact very, very wet. Another thing we noticed, is both of the hydraulic lift cylinders for the blade are absolutley gone. We will be replacing these with the other D4's (one next to the fuel truck). On Sunday, Connor, Jenn, Robyn, Nate and I took off the radiator. Upon removing it, it was realized that the connection points for the hoses were different on the originial radiator than the replacement.....
Pictures will follow!

I did some more work on this machine this past weekend with John and Nate. We found a lower radiator tube that fits, so we mounted the new radiator onto the machine and then I fit the lower tube on with fresh gaskets and RTV. I'm still looking for a thermostat, but currently we can fill the engine and radiator with water to ensure that the "new" radiator doesn't leak. Then the hydraulic unit and blade can be replaced, and we can start working on brakes and clutches.

If you can't find a thermostat around the farm I bet H.O. Penn could get it but genuine Cat parts are $$$. Bill might know of somewhere or someone who has one. These old D4s are still pretty common.

Just talked to bill williams, we'll see if he can find anything.

John and I filled the radiator with water and found that there were (luckily) no leaks in the new radiator! With that done, we decided to install the upper radiator hose and ignore the thermostat for now. we'll install the temp gauge, and if we have issues with overheating, we will then try to source one.
Next is to install the hydraulic unit, grille, and blade, and then take apart the rear end to get to the clutches.

No, it still needs the blade put on and the steering clutches and brakes removed and repaired. Also at some point the pony motor needs some loving. This past weekend I put on the grille and with the help of john and david, put on the hydraulic unit. We all had a great time tightening down the 4 3/4" nuts that hold the unit on - they are hardly accessible by hand or wrench. the engineers at Cat must have been having an off day! Next up, install hyd. lines, drain and refill hyd. oil, replace cylinders, grill guard, blade, then tackle the steering. Connor

Why was this D4 even attempted when you had one that only needed the master clutch adjusted?
